TAKE A HOLIDAY FOR SIX DAYS
A recent study2 took a group of women aged 30–60 to the same holiday resort for six days, with half of them randomly selected to join a meditation training programme, the other half simply enjoying the resort, plus an additional group experienced in meditation taking the meditation classes. The scientists from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the University of California and Harvard Medical School measured stress levels before, and one month and ten months after the holiday. They found that not only did the holiday reduce stress levels, this lasted post-holiday. For the meditating groups the benefits lasted longer, in particular the experience meditation group. What’s significant about this test is that as well as looking at what participants reported, it also measured the molecular network patterns in their brains for an accurate biological measure of the body and the immune system. The study concluded that meditation changes how our bodies function and can lead to healthy ageing. Whether you meditate or not, however, a six-day holiday will have lasting benefits.
